Ajax player accused of arrogance: ‘Bench him for weeks’
Former soccer player and current analyst Johan Derksen was extremely annoyed last weekend by the behavior of Wout Weghorst. In his view, the way he behaved during the substitution against FC Twente is a case of “hubris.”
On the show “Vandaag Inside,” he had this to say: “He kicked the ball in; he finished off a good cross. But other than that, he didn’t play any role at all,” Derksen downplayed Weghorst’s contribution in the 2-1 loss to FC Twente.
“Wout Weghorst put on a show when he was substituted”
Derksen noticed that Weghorst was "putting on a show" when he was substituted for Don-Angelo Konadu in the 72nd minute. “Because the camera is focused on him. And then that look on his face: how could you possibly do that? You take off the best player on the field, the one who can earn you points. Incomprehensible, people, incomprehensible.” Derksen believes Oscar Garcia needs to take decisive action and “not start Weghorst for three weeks” because of this incident.
Weghorst's contract with Ajax and no agreement has yet been reached on an extension. The striker has been linked for weeks with a move to FC Twente, but that transfer is not yet official either.
