Vermaelen zou Barca graag willen verlaten vanwege het gebrek aan speeltijd. In twee seizoen kwam hij namelijk maar amper aan spelen toe in Spanje, terwijl hij bij Ajax én Arsenal altijd een vaste waarde was in het hart van de defensie. Door de komst van de Franse verdediger Samuel Umtiti, die voor 25 miljoen euro overkwam van Olympique Lyon, lijkt de rol van Vermaelen definitief uitgespeeld.
